I just bought a bungalow in the and the tiles on the fireplace have been painted white (what is wrong with people???). From the pattern I can see I have matched it with a Batchelder catalog that I have.
How do I remove the paint without damaging the glaze? Has anyone done this successfully?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Art tile, how wonderful! Removing the paint is a relatively simple restoration project with an enormous pay-off! Over the years, I have successfully removed paint from a variety of glazed surfaces, including fireplace tile and a very large Roseville Peony vase (a garage sale find spray painted gold!) I used paint remover, a wooden shim, paper towels or disposable rags, tooth picks, and a natural bristle vegetable brush. The paint remover did not damage the glazed surfaces at all. I used the wooden shim as a paint scraper because it was impervious to the remover, but wouldn't scratch the the glaze or the grout. Ditto for the tooth picks and the natural bristle brush. I put the paint remover on and let it work. Then I scraped the major part of the gunk off with the wooden shim. After that I wiped down the surface and used the tooth picks and vegetable brush to get the gunk out of the difficult spots. I would advise using colorless paint remover. Some of the colored removers -- Citristrip for example -- can stain grout and/or chips in the tile.
If you can, post before and after pictures for us to appreciate.
