I have just purchased my first house, built maybe 1930's, could also have been built earlier. In the original bathroom the ceiling and walls have NON-DECORATIVE tin. The hall area also has tin on the ceiling and walls and I think the kitchen also had tin on the walls before the previous owner put up paneling. I am curious as to why tin would have been used instead of plaster or some other material. Any idea, please advise.

I'm guessing that your tin may be installed over plaster??? Tin was often put up, especially on ceilings, to hide problems like cracks, water damage, etc.. and the pressed decoration was a bonus. If there isn't plaster underneath it may have been torn out because of the aforementioned problems. Applying tin was a quick and a relatively inexpensive fix compared to replastering. Just a guess.

You may want to do a little forensic excavation to just what's underneath.
