Hello y'all! We just bought an adorable little "later" Bungalow here in central Phoenix. This house has TONS of potential, but it has been "redone" in the 80's and about 2 years ago. It is NOT a Craftsman or anything that nice, it was built in the 40's after all of that seemed to have gone out of fashion. (1920's Bungalows are hard to come by here in Arizona, as a lot of them were torn down in the 70's and 80's to make way for new houses...VERY sad!)
Anyway, I do NOT want to keep this house as-is. I want to slowly but surely restore it to what it would have been as it was built in 1945. I CANNOT find anything with pictures and/or VERY good descriptions as to how anything would have looked back then. All I can find are wonderful things on the homes built in the 20's. Can anyone help me??? (I am first and foremost interested in doing something with this AWFUL bathroom, I know it had to have been charming at one point in time!) The 80's version of 1945 kitchen is next on the chopping block.
Thanks SO much for your kind help!

A big help might be your local library. Look for copies of magazines from that era like Life, Better Homes and Gardens, etc. that have a lot of ads and homemaking articles in them, they'll show you what was new and exciting at the time. Sometimes old copies of magazines are for sale at flea markets, antique shops, and some libraries have them on microfilm or computer archives.

You may not get Craftsman....but you do get some Art Deco (to the 40's) and some of those other funky, streamlined fixtures, whic in my humble opinion are just as cool.

It was helpful to me to look at some of the websites/catalogs available for specific products that listed the dates of the products they carried.....they gave me an idea of what the rest might have looked like.

Order Rejuvination's catalog.....they have a nice explanation of the various period decorations.....and sometimes it is helpful just to see the lighting in use during the time period of your house....then you can imagine the wallpaper, etc. to match. www.rejuvination.com
Also, you can take a look at some of the 40's stoves at www.antiquestoveheaven.com
Hope this helps.

My daughter and her husband are living in the home his grandfather built in the 40s for his bride. It has reamined virtually unchanged. I'll have them take photos and we will post them.

That would be FABULOUS!!! I finally met one of my neighbors this afternoon and they inherited the house from her parents, who were the original owners. She said very little has changed and we are welcome to come take a gander at it to get ideas too!!!
These websites are GREAT!!! Thanks y'all!
